Here We Go!
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ROOM D102?
Using the FlipGrid app, students created short videos telling 2 truths and 1 lie. Students had to figure out which statement was the lie. It was a great way to get to know one another. All of the school rules and classroom procedures have been discussed in all of my classes. We will continue to practice and remind each other what is expected.
The Solar Eclipse
We were able to go outside and try to see the eclipse using safety glasses. Unfortunately, we couldn't see much due to the fog. Of course, I kept telling everyone, "Don't look at the Sun!". We did a lesson on the eclipse and we were able to watch some video clips that explained it, as well as do an activity and a journal entry on the student websites.
Notebooks
Students have started setting up their notebooks for math and science. They will have a spiral notebook, as well as a digital notebook in the form of a website.
Math
We have started off with a "Week of Inspirational Math". These are fabulous math lessons from https://www.youcubed.org/week-inspirational-math/ that were put together by Jo Boaler and colleagues. She is Co-Founder of youcubed and the Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford. It was great fun to see the students trying to make the numbers 1-20 only using the number 4 four times and no other number. The students learned about square roots and factorials to help them find all of the numbers. Some of us are a little rusty on our math facts, so students should be practicing everyday. They can do it the old fashioned way using flashcards or there are a ton of apps that students can download to practice. Parents can download worksheets at https://www.math-drills.com/multiplication.php
Adopt-A-College
Each classroom adopts a college. We like to educate the students as much as we can about college so that if they choose to attend, they will be prepared. It's never too early to start discussing college. The college for D102 is the University of Hawaii.
Robotics Elective
Students will learn to learn how to program robots to move around using a coding language called Ch.. Currently students are working on a story which will become a screenplay. Students will make a movie using the robots as the main characters.
